Every year the Military Police members at Canadian Forces Base Valcartier take part in one of the MPFBC biggest fundraiser by hosting an Annual Hockey Tournament. A special you to Sgt Eric Morinville for providing this write up and pictures of this great initiative.
“Towards the end of March each year, for the past 15 years, a pilgrimage has taken hundreds of hockey fans to the Clément Boulanger arena at the Valcartier base in Québec, where the famous Military Police hockey tournament is held for the benefit of the MP fund for blind children. From Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and the Atlantic provinces, active and retired military police meet to get their hands on the prestigious trophy for the best team. Although it is a friendly activity, the rivalry is intense and the game rises a notch. This tournament started in 2005 with the first edition and has endured over time since. It is the members of the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service, Eastern Region, who set it up and have carried the torch ever since. In addition to their already high workload, they continue to offer this tournament year after year in order to donate all the profits raised to the MP fund for blind children. Between $ 7,000 and $ 8,000 is donated annually to the foundation thanks to the generosity of all its participants and various donors. The tournament still begins on Friday with a formal faceoff preceded by the national anthem, followed by a few games of hockey. On Saturday, all day long, the different teams meet until the end of the afternoon, where all are invited to a supper which often serves as a reunion for many. Various door prizes were drawn among the guests and auctions were held to raise more money for the foundation. Certain prestigious items such as hockey jerseys signed by Guy Lafleur, Shea Weber, Patrice Bergeron, and even Alex Ovechkin have already been sold at a high price. On Sunday morning, after a short night for some, the semi-finals and the final are played, followed by the presentation of the trophy to the champion team. Then comes the long-awaited moment, the unveiling of the check which will be given to the foundation. Players will then meet for the next edition, which is already expected. (Due to events related to Covid-19, the 16th edition had to be canceled and postponed until next year.)”
